A shared history of growth

INA is one of the MOL Group's most important long-term, historic investments, strengthening Croatia's economy and energy security as one of the leading energy companies in Southeast Europe.

MOL and INA have been successfully cooperating for more than 20 years.

The strategic partnership began in 2003, and a year later, INA won the OECD Investment Compact Award.

In 2005, INA became one of the first major Croatian companies to be listed on the international stock exchange, and in 2008, MOL became the company's largest single shareholder.

Between 2003 and 2025, MOL Group supported INA's EUR 3.5 billion investments into upstream oil and gas assets, while the downstream segment received an additional EUR 1.3 billion in development.

Our joint work in Upstream:

  • In the Upstream business, INA has enhanced its international portfolio — most recently in Egypt, where new oil and gas discoveries were made in 2023.
  • With MOL Group’s continued strategic cooperation and support, INA has also strengthened its domestic exploration and production activities.
  • Notable example is the cross‑border gas‑field development project in Somogy County, Hungary — a true demonstration of successful collaboration between the two companies.

Downstream:

  • Between 2005 and 2011, EUR 66 million were invested in modernizing the downstream area to improve quality and overall emission efficiency.
  • Between 2007 and 2011, the construction of the MHC/HDS complex in Rijeka happened including hydrocracking, hydrogen plant and sulphur recovery. s
  • In 2010, Euro V fuels and “CLASS” premium fuels were launched.
  • In 2020, a nearly EUR 700 million modernization project began at the Rijeka refinery — one of MOL Group's largest investments and the largest project in INA's history. Its key objectives are to improve efficiency and reduce diesel imports. The new delayed coker unit will significantly increase crude‑oil processing and diesel production — further strengthening the energy security of Croatia and the region.

Green transition:

  • MOL Group’s partnership has also helped INA accelerate its green transition — enabling the company to better support both national and European energy and climate goals.
  • In 2023, INA commissioned its first solar power plants in Virje and Sisak, with a combined capacity of 16 MW, marking the company’s initial step into renewable electricity production, with further projects planned.
  • In 2024, contracts were signed for a green‑hydrogen plant at the Rijeka refinery — the first commercial green‑hydrogen facility in Croatia.

Consumer services:

  • Over the past twenty years, INA has also significantly expanded its retail network — extending operations into Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Slovenia.
  • The company has introduced MOL Group’s Fresh Corner gastro concept, transforming its retail offering from traditional fuel sales into a modern convenience‑retail experience.
  • The modernization of INA’s Croatian retail network was accelerated and further expansion led to more than 500 service stations operated by INA in the region.

Together, MOL Group and INA have built a partnership that not only strengthens regional energy security, but also drives long‑term economic growth and innovation. Looking ahead, this cooperation remains a solid foundation for further progress, new investments and continued success for both companies.
